Smith Park Is Having Its Best Summer Yet
Jumping into Seneca Lake, catching a sunset, launching your boat, escaping the heat on a summer day. This is what it's all about.
Smith Park has been a blessing to Hector residents since the '60s. Leon and Mildred Smith generously donated this property for the whole community to enjoy, and honestly, they were wise to do it. Because today, owning waterfront on Seneca Lake is out of reach for most people. After enduring these long Finger Lakes winters, not being able to access the lifeblood of this area would be a crime.
Which is exactly why improving and investing in Smith Park has become a priority for the Town of Hector.
Big Upgrades Are Coming
The park is getting some well-deserved attention. A new park office building with updated bathrooms and improved facilities is on the way, along with a stronger focus on making the park more accessible for day-use and community activities. A nature-inspired playground is also in the future works, using natural elements to create a fun space for kids.
New This Summer: Kayak Rentals
One of the most exciting additions this season is kayak rentals. Thanks to Brian Poulsen, who generously donated kayaks, a canoe, and accessories, rentals will be available this summer. Whether you're a first-timer or a regular on the water, this is a great reason to get out there.
More Than Just a Beach
There's a strong push this year to encourage locals to take full advantage of the public space. Think beach days, picnics at the pavilion, weekly gatherings, yoga classes, book clubs, or just a morning walk with a better view. The park is yours — and it's meant to be used.
A Gem Worth Protecting
We're incredibly lucky to have a place like this in the heart of Southeast Seneca. With over 50 campsites, a public beach, and a boat launch, it's the only park of its kind for miles — and it keeps getting better. New signage, ongoing improvements, and one simple goal: keep this space special for the local community and make sure every visitor gets a taste of how beautiful it is here.
