The Burdett Exchange
Johnathan and Lindsey Wasson are no strangers to New York State farming and agriculture. Both grew up on farms, developing the deep appreciation for the industry and the hands-on knowledge that comes second nature to farm kids. The Burdett Exchange is a culmination of their love for locally grown goods and handmade items—each one thoughtfully chosen, a fact that becomes clear the moment you walk through the door.
In 2021, when the old Burdett Fire House went up for sale, the Wassons saw an opportunity. They imagined turning the historic building into a market, and a plan began to take shape. The building was in need of restoration, but with Johnathan's carpentry skills, he transformed it into a beautiful store with a mix of industrial and traditional market flair.
Johnathan grew up on the Arcangeli farm in Burdett and studied agricultural business at SUNY Cobleskill, giving him the foundation he needed to run a successful agriculture-based business. His family farm had long produced high-quality natural beef and pork, and the store offered a way to sell directly to consumers in smaller quantities while growing their customer base. Lindsey grew up on a 600-acre farm, where she helped manage her parents' farm stand as a child. After earning her Pharmacy degree, her career brought her to Watkins Glen. She and Johnathan met through mutual friends, and with such similar backgrounds, it's no wonder they fell in love. In 2024, they welcomed their sweet baby, Blair, into the family.
When Lindsey and Johnathan opened The Burdett Exchange in 2022, the focus was primarily on produce and meat. Since then, the store has grown into a place with everything you need to create great meals from quality ingredients. Local breads and pastries arrive fresh on Wednesdays and Fridays, and the shelves feature fresh-cut flowers, local pottery, macarons, quality pasta, a great selection of pickled goods, sauces, cheeses, and honey—just a sampling of what they carry. Both are passionate about seeking out the best from local producers, and it shows.
The Burdett Exchange has helped breathe new life into Burdett. A market where locals and visitors alike can fill their fridges with quality ingredients is a real gift to the community. It has fostered a downtown feel and offers the kind of shopping that feels good and supports local businesses. We're so thankful for the Wassons' entrepreneurial spirit and thrilled to have them as members of South East Seneca!
